Pennywise the Dancing Clown is back and he’s here to terrorize the small town of Derry as well as unleashing the coulrophobia you never knew you had. IT Chapter 2 is a sequel that comes from Andy Muschietti, the same director who helmed the first movie in 2017. IT (2017) broke multiple records, namely for being the highest grossing R-rated horror film of all-time and also the highest grossing horror film internationally. Now, we have the sequel and the expectations are inevitably high but what can we expect from it?
The first thing that stood out for this highly anticipated follow-up was its run time, which is just 10 minutes shy of 3 hours (can’t dethrone Avengers: Endgame though). Thankfully, the smooth pacing saves it from exhaustion as there’s never a dull moment on screen. The set pieces are impeccable, and the performances are spot on, with the ensemble talented cast successfully mirroring the same traits and appearances of the former younger actors before. The characters are self-aware, smart and always delivering intentional hilarious dialogue which helps balances the movie out from its darker tone.
The problem with IT Chapter 2 though, is that the second half of the movie feels like a weird adventure flick that’s just littered with horror elements. Scares are aplenty but rather unconventional as compared to its predecessor which relied more on straightforward haunted house jump scares. The overall visuals are wonderful to look at but the heavy use of CGI for the apparitions and scares are a bit of a let down. With that being said, this movie could likely be a hit or miss as audiences will either find it completely scary or downright goofy. There is no in-between. They made sure not to shy away from blood, gross out gags and violence though so genre fans will surely be satisfied.
IT Chapter 2, despite struggling to deliver the scares, is still a damn entertaining sequel. Reactions are guaranteed to be polarizing but it definitely deserves a watch, especially if you’re a fan of the first one. Fun? Yes. Scary? Not really.
Plotline: The evil clown Pennywise returns 27 years later to torment the grown-up members of the Losers’ Club, who have long since drifted apart from one another.
